After studying Laser Physics at Essex University (1992), I’ve always had an avid interest in optics and photonics. I therefore feel fortunate to have started my career as a laser design engineer at AWE Aldermaston where I had the privilege of working alongside some of the UK’s finest physicists and optical designers. After a thoroughly enjoyable seven years of detailed design and development work, I was given the chance to move into the telecoms industry designing and packaging next generation 980nm pump lasers for Nortel Networks – the beginnings of my exhilarating exposure into the commercial world of manufacturing, quality, on-time delivery and customer-care.
In 2002 I was offered a management position at Powerlase Photonics (Crawley), heading the development and subsequent product-marketing of their high-power Nd:YAG DPSS laser systems. This involved a great deal of travel to the Far East, developing key OEM blue-chip accounts, along with an eye-opening introduction into the delights (and surprises!) of Korean and Japanese cuisine.
Enjoying the satisfaction of developing technology-based products and businesses, I’ve since been involved in directing the introduction of new metrology instruments for Ametek / Taylor Hobson, and managing various start-up companies through their early-stage commercialisation and subsequent growth.
Joining Crystran in Dec 2014, I am both honoured and excited to be part of a company with such fine pedigree and reputation. With help from our highly skilled technicians and experienced sales team, I’m looking forward to continuing our driven legacy of honesty, integrity and customer-value – the three guiding principles instilled into Crystran’s DNA by our Founder and previous MD, Mr Graham Fancy.
Outside of work I enjoy anything associated with going in water and, of course, spending as much time as possible with my wife and two young boys, Tommy and Harry.
