A Brief History of Crystran

In our continued celebration of 30 years of manufacturing, we have compiled an overview of the History of Crystran

 

1993-2023

 

1973 

BDH Chemicals acquired furnaces and crystal growing experts from Hilger and Gulton Industries.

 

1973 

BDH acquired by Merck Ltd.

 

 

 

1986 

First edition of “The Crystran Handbook” (as BDH Ltd).

 

1990 

BDH name changed to Merck.

 

1993 

Crystran Ltd formed as MBO (1st November).

 

1986 

ISO9002 Quality Standard gained.

Acquisition of CNC dicing saw.

Crystran website and domain name registered www.crystran.co.uk(as BDH Ltd).

 

 

1995 

Moved to leased factory premises in Factory Road, Upton.

 

1996 

First double-sided polishing machines purchased.

 

1997 

Installation of first computer analysed interferometer and optical table.

 

1998 

First 48” Lapmaster pitch polishing machine installed.

 

1999 

Second Double-sided polishing machine purchased.
IR & UV/VIS Perkin Elmer Spectrometers commissioned.

 

2000 

Trioptics high precision prism angle test equipment installed.

 

2001 

Second 48” Lapmaster.

 

2003 

Purchase of land for new purpose built factory (March).

Moved to larger freehold factory completed in November.

 

2009 

First time exhibiting at Photonics West.

 

2013 

Purchase of bespoke chamfering machine.

 

2014 

Mark Middleton was appointed as General Manager.

 

2015 

First Summer outing, which became an annual event!

 

2018 

Launch of webshop.

 

2019 

Purchase of first low coherence interferometer on the market.

 

2020 

Installation of 5 axis CNC machine.

 

2023 

Building extension completed.

Launch of new website.
